CASTELLO DI CINZANO

The castle along with the park and the structures which belong to it and the parish church make up a nucleus that is, today, separate from the rest of the town. This image is the fruit of a change which began around 1666 when the Marquis Carlo Renato Della Chiesa decided to enlarge and embellish the castle and to surround it with a garden. At the same time as this work was being carried out, which gave the castle a new façade in symmetry with the ancient tower as well as a large salon created within the ancient internal covered courtyard, the acquisition of boarding homes was going on in order to demolish them and use the space for new gardens. At the beginning of the 19th century, the branch of the firstborn of the Chiesa family died out and the castle was sold with all of its possessions, which were divided up. Only in 1872, the Marquis Ludovico Della Chiesa reacquired the castle and restored it in a Neo-Medieval style embellishing it with new crenellation copied from that of the older tower and giving the castle a new rising entrance and a small out-building for the gardener. To decorate the interior and to organize the gardens, Count di Ernesto di Sambuy intervened, who, at that time, was on the promotional committee for the construction of the medieval hamlet of Valentino. While the work carried out during the 17th century tried to mask the castle’s medieval structure in order to turn it into, as much as possible, a vacation home, the work during the 19th century allowed the castle to reacquire the look of an ancient fortress – a look which still characterizes it today. In 1951, with the death of the last marquis, the castle, which had been damaged during the war and by years of neglect, was sold and restored. In 1968, it was divided up into apartments.
