CHIESA DELLA MADONNA DEL CARMINE

Situated in the isolated San Callisto area and bought by the Carmelitani in 1718 (following the transfer of their first seat to Santa Maria di Piazza), the church was built according to the designs of Filippo Juvarra, who was under direct authority of the bishop Francesco di Gattinara, and it stands out as the new rector’s estate (Via del Carmine), linked between Piazza Susina (now Savoia) and the new western part of the city. The works, which commenced in 1732, were concluded a few years later, however the facade was left unfinished and that was only completed in 1871. The structure of the lateral chapels is extraordinarily innovative with its lit chambers inundating the central nave with light after its total Juvarran transformation. In the apsis, the altar, displaying the ‘Madonna del Carmine e il beato Amedeo di Savoia’ by Claudio Francesco Beaumont, is another excellent piece of work.
