It is impossible to separate the history of this town from its castle, which dominates the town from the top of the hill. Built around 1000 as a defense for the county of Acqui, it was then subjugated by Federico Barbarossa, inhabited by the marquis of Monferrato, and finally destroyed in the 14th century following the wars between the Guelfs and Ghibellines. Later on, the castle was rebuilt and at the end of the 16th century went to the marquis of Faa, as did the entire fiefdom of Bruno. Today, the city’s symbolic monument has an 18th century look, but several medieval parts are still visible.
