Piazzetta Reale - 10122 Torino (To)

A magnificent 17th century structure, the residency of the Dukes of Savoy, of the Kings of Sardinia, and of the Kings of Italy until 1865, is the center – from an urban point of view, as well as from an historical, architectural, and artistic point of view. Reworked several times, it preserves the marks of the interventions carried out by the most important artists working in Turin over three centuries. Precious furnishings, ceilings in inlaid wood, and boiseries characterize the salons. Quite powerful is the Salone degli Svizzeri (Swiss Salon) with its frescos that tell the genealogical history of the Savoy and the Galleria del Daniel that celebrates King Vittorio Amedeo II in an arch. Suspended among Baroque, Rococo, and Neo-Classic, the Royal Palace (Palazzo Reale) was also enlarged during the 18th century. Filippo Juvarra designed the split flight Scala delle Forbici (Scissor Staircase) and the Chinese Exhibit Room - an expression of the new taste for exoticism. Later, the artist Francesco Beaumont was given the task of intervening with his pictorial work in many of the palace rooms such as the Galleria delle Battaglie (Gallery of Battles) and the Galleria dell”Armeria (Armory Gallery). Under the reign of Carlo Alberto, towards the end of the 18th century, new rooms such as the Salone da Ballo (Dance Hall) were created, while Pelagio Palagi – who created the iron gate opposite the palace – was entrusted with redefining several rooms with new décor such as the Medals Exhibition Room and the Council Hall. At the completion of the interior of the building, we go to the garden designed by André le Notre, the most important garden architect of the 17th century, already working at the Sun King’s court. Today, the Royal Palace, the seat of the museum of the same name, gives us the opportunity to admire one of the most sumptuous royal homes in Europe.
