Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile in Torino
Torino is the undisputed Italian capital of the automobile and this is confirmed by industry, design, the project planning and the research centers: for the Piedmontese capital, the automobile represents not only a productive factor, but also a cultural and social phenomenon which is appreciated today and expressed through the transformation of the Museo dell’Automobile, open once again to the public after four years for the occasion of its 151 years of existence and the 150 year anniversary of Italian Unity. This is not a simple architectural reconstruction but an intervention which dynamically places the new reality of the museum into the Italian cultural panorama. Its features, both contemporary and futuristic, were designed by the architect Cino Zucchi and the innovative exposition space is the work of the scenographer François Confino, who has already prepared the Museo del Cinema in Torino.
The Museo Nazionale dell’Automobile in Torino boasts one of the rarest and most interesting collections of its kind at both a national and international level with almost 200 original automobiles from 80 different brands ranging from 1769 to 1996, and arriving from 8 countries throughout the world: Italy, France, Great Britain, Germany, Holland, Spain, Poland and the United States; from among the most precious collections we find the “steam vehicle” designed by Virginio Bordino in 1854. The automobiles on display in the 19,000 square meters allocated in 30 new sections, are placed within the social context in which they were born, underlining how much everyday objects, and the automobile in particular, are bona fide mirrors of taste and routine which also represent a historical memory of that which we once were and that which we are becoming: from the Fiat 500 of 1957, to the Volkswagen Tipo 1 of 1952, the famous Beetle, leading to the Autobianchi Bianchina of 1959, a very classy economy car. To the museum expositions, there has been added a space for events, a meeting center, a documentation center in addition to the didactic center, and a bookshop and a cafe’/restaurant.
